What does "pray without ceasing" mean?

16 Rejoice evermore. 17 Pray without ceasing. 18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
I want to obey this verse, but I don't understand how anyone can pray all the time. A few things confuse me:
  • Does "without ceasing" mean I have to be praying every minute of the day?
  • How can I pray without ceasing while I'm working, driving, or talking with people?
  • Why does Paul put this between "rejoice evermore" and "in every thing give thanks"?
  • Is a quick silent prayer during the day real prayer, or does it have to be on my knees?
  • What did this look like for Jesus and the apostles?
A man prays quietly in his truck at sunrise, showing that praying without ceasing can happen anywhere during an ordinary day.

For me, praying without ceasing means inviting Father Jesus and Holy Spirit into everything in our lives, every aspect, every moment, every thought, every activity. It is not only speaking with God but being in communion and fellowship with him constantly. It is also about being the same person all the time, even when we sin or do things to waste our time or poorly stewarding the resources God has given us, we are still aware that YHWH is always there with us, and he is not forcing us or making us feel guilty, but rather waiting patiently with anticipation and love for us to join Him in what he is doing and what he wants us to do with our life this day in this moment.
