What did Jesus mean by "neither cast ye your pearls before swine" (Matthew 7:6)?

Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you:
A white pearl trampled into the mud by hoofprints, with a beam of light still shining on it, illustrating Matthew 7:6 (KJV): "neither cast ye your pearls before swine."

In this short parable, Jesus is demonstrating to us that unbelievers do not value the things of God like we value them. It is similar to when Jesus tells his disciples in : …if a house or town will not welcome you or listen, leave and shake the dust off your feet... We are not to waste our time or energy on those who reject the truth, and who don’t value God’s Kingdom. It is a waste of valuable resources. Instead spend time and energy focusing on those who value your resources. This doesn’t only apply to God’s truth, but money and food as well. Paul tells us, if anyone is unwilling to work, they shall not eat paraphrased. As with food and money, so with the Kingdom of God, we are only to help others who are willing to help themselves.
